May 8: Empty Bowls Event 2010
We are gearing up for Empty Bowls 2010 so it is time to start making bowls for this event.
One to two pounds of clay make a nice size bowl since they hold 8-16 ounces of soup. This is an opportunity for you to try some new shapes, some new glaze combinations, or a new decorating technique. Use your imagination! Have fun! Use color!
As in past years, we will begin picking up bowls the first week in May, 2010.
Because of your generous donations last year we were able to raise over $13,000. It would be wonderful to surpass that number this year.
Everyone leaves this event saying, "Next year, I'm going to bring my friends!" If you have some bowls that you are storing after the holiday sales, maybe you'd like to donate them to Empty Bowls. Just let me know who, where and when and I will pick them up.

We thank you, TACO thanks you, the people who have eaten better thank you and the people who have bought your bowls thank you! For those of you who don't know TACO stands for Third Avenue Charitable Organization. They as
sist in feeding the elderly and those who are going through transition. They are a great group and are very appreciative of your donations to Empty Bowls.
I know potters are asked for donations quite often, however;; this is an event I like to participate in because it is so much fun and it really introduces people to the joy of eating from a handmade object. If you come to the event, you get to see who picks your bowls. It is a great opportunity to promo yourself and your work.
May 22: 2010 Mudfest Event
Mudfest is a day of fun in the mud and learning about clay. The day involves friendly games of skill on the pottery wheel and hand building with clay for amateurs and professionals. The event is produced to help educate the public about the process of creating objects with clay and is hosted by the Clay Artists of San Diego (CASD) and the San Diego Potters Guild.
Mudfest 2010 includes more than a dozen “clay games” for all ages and skill levels. Potters, students and anyone interested in participating, no experience needed, are welcome to compete in events such as throwing without using their hands, throwing blindfolded, tandem throwing (two people each use one hand to form a pot), team handle pull, and all day hand building. Area high schools are invited to enter a team of students for competitions and for a chance to win prizes including a day with a working artist at their school.
Mudfest 2010 includes demonstrations by local potters, a children’s booth, pottery display area/information booths where people can learn more about clay and where they may take classes.
Mudfest 2010 takes place 0n Saturday May 22, 2010 in Spanish Village in Balboa Park. Events start at 10 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. Mudfest is free and open to the public.
Please contact Dee McMillen, Mudfest Chair, with any questions you may have or if you are able to volunteer at the event.
